A Chinese Restaurant Offers Delicious Food And Exotic Ambiance

By Adriana Noton

As a kid, the decorations at a nearby Chinese restaurant meant more to me than the food itself. They sparked a young imagination, what with the woodwork engraved with hummingbirds and flowers, the paper lanterns and the gilded dragons. Although the food is of primary importance to me now, I am still fondest of a place that can offer high quality food and an exotic decor.

Another favorite thing about Chinese restaurants is that you can find them just about everywhere. From Europe to Canada to South America and everywhere else on the globe that Chinese people have immigrated to, you can find these restaurants. When traveling, they provide a welcome change from local cuisine, as well as a sense of familiarity. You often find that the flavors will have been modified slightly for the local palate.

A country as large as China is naturally going to produce many different varieties of cooking. This is partially true because of the many varieties of climates present. All over the world, cooking is influenced by the local temperature and weather.

The Cantonese were the first immigrants from China to the United States. They came because they wanted to get away from China. But they also came to find work which they generally did with the railroads initially. At the same time, they brought their culture with them.

In larger cities where the Chinese immigrants tended to congregate, like San Francisco, specific areas called Chinatowns began to form. These spots provided exotic locations for non-Chinese to visit where they would have exposure to Chinese culture such as herbal apothecaries, acupuncturists, Tai Chi and, naturally, Chinese restaurants.

The first restaurants in the United States were Cantonese, due to the immigrants. One of the most well-known dishes, the sweet and sour chicken and pork, are Cantonese. Their chefs use several different methods of cooking such as steaming, roasting and stir frying. Dim sum is another Cantonese style of cooking. These are small pastries that are filled with different things from meats or vegetables to sweets. Dim sum restaurants are very popular on Sunday mornings.

When later immigrants came, they brought with them other styles of cooking. A favorite is Szechuan, which is very spicy. It comes from the largest province where trade routes brought the influence of other cuisines such as Indian and its use of hot spices. Szechuan recipes are known for their use of chili peppers, peppercorn, garlic and onions.

Unlike the early days when a Chinese restaurant specialized in one style of cooking, now you will often find dishes from many different regions in one place. This gives you the option to taste among several varieties for yourself. The dishes are generally served in portions which are large enough to share. This offers a fun way to taste even more varieties. It is never too late to try a Chinese restaurant. And it is never too soon to go back again. - 33387
